The Applied Sport and Exercise Science MSc/ MA has three distinct and separate pathways of study allowing you to focus on Applied Sport Performance, Physical Activity and Health, or Sport Management. You can elect to study topics in your chosen area of interest and the programme allows you to design your master’s degree to meet your career aspirations.
The Applied Sport and Exercise Science MSc/ MA provides the opportunity for you to develop critical understanding of key topics in your chosen pathway. The learning is blended – including a mix of online, seminar, workshop, and practical-based sessions – to meet the needs of students balancing home, study, and work requirements. All modules are designed and delivered by staff with national and international research reputations and/or extensive industry experience.

Senior Lecturer in Sport Studies
Tony Baross first studied Sport & Exercise Science at Canterbury Christ Church University. After graduating in 1996 he went on to undertake a MSc in Exercise and Health Behaviour at the City University, London before been employed as a Further Education lecturer at Bedford college until 1998.
He joined the University of Northampton in 1998 where he taught undergraduate and postgraduate level sport and exercise physiology, and strength and conditioning. During this time he completed a PGCE in post-compulsory education before undertaking his PhD in Cardiovascular Physiology and graduated in 2011 from the University of Kent.
Tony continues to develop his post-doctoral research, supervising doctoral students, gaining external funding and presenting research at international conferences and publishing in top-ranked, high-impact international journals. Currently Tony is a research theme lead within the Faculty Research Centre at the University of Northampton. His main area of research is the effects of isometric resistance training (IRT) on cardiovascular parameters particular resting and ambulatory blood pressure.

The Sports Zone at Waterside is home to a multi-use sports dome suitable for a variety of sports, including football, badminton and netball. The facilities include four sports performance laboratories, including a specific Physiology performance laboratory, a Biomechanical analysis laboratory and a strength and conditioning suite, a pair of teaching rooms in addition to changing rooms. Furthermore, there are also three outdoor multi-use games areas and a floodlit full-size all-weather sports pitch. The sports dome is used for teaching, research and recreational activities.
