And if you’re an aspiring journalist, studying the industry at UON is a brilliant starting point into a future career in the field.
How do the journalism courses work?
At UON you will learn about how the journalism industry works and the inner workings of the media environment, also the regulation and law that play a big role in the world. If you are studying the sports journalism course, the focus will be on sports related topics.
In your first year, you will learn about the basic journalism principles. You will be able to build your knowledge and understanding of how to write and create whilst also learning about the laws and regulations that govern the industry.
In your second year, you build on these skills and start to delve into the nitty-gritty area of creating news stories in different mediums, such as TV, Radio, Digital and Physical media, whilst also developing your digital and designing skills. Finally, in your third year, it all about getting yourself ready for the industry, this will be when you really develop the area of journalism you want to go into (and also in Semester Two of second year).
During your course, you will also learn how to use different equipment and get to use specialist rooms such as the TV Studio, Radio Studio as well as the editing and podcasting suites. You will also learn from experts who have spent decades in the media both in lectures and in the “Chron Talks”.
The opportunity to go on a placement is also available on both journalism courses, which will help you further develop your skills.
