The Variety of Societies at UON

One of the great things about UON is the huge variety of societies available. Personally, I am part of quite a few, including the Islamic Society, Debate Society, Badminton, Volleyball, Table Tennis, British Sign Language, Archery, Occupational Therapy Society, and even American Football.

There is something for everyone. Whether you enjoy sports, cultural groups, academic societies, or learning new skills, there will always be a group where you can find people with similar interests.

Finding My Favorite Societies

Although I enjoy all the societies, I’m part of, my favourites are the Islamic Society, Debate Society, and Badminton.

The Islamic Society gave me a strong sense of comfort and belonging when I first arrived at university. The Debate Society challenges the way I think and helps me improve my speaking and analytical skills.

Badminton is another highlight for me. I’m part of the competitive team, and the regular common sessions are always a great time. It’s one of those places where you can relax, improve your skills, and enjoy the sport with friends.

More Than Just Activities

Societies offer much more than just activities. Through them, I’ve met a wide variety of people, built networks, and developed new skills. Some societies organise events like debates, charity fundraisers, and sports tournaments, which makes university life much more dynamic for me.

Being part of these groups has also helped me grow personally. I’ve improved my badminton abilities, debating skills, and even learned new skills like archery. Most importantly, I’ve gained confidence and a strong sense of community.

How to Join or Start a Society

The easiest way to join societies is through the Students’ Union, especially during the Societies Fair where you can explore different groups and sign up.

If you can’t find a society that matches your interests, you can even start your own. To create a new society, you need three volunteers to take on key roles: President, Treasurer, and Welfare Representative, along with at least 15 students interested in joining. The Students’ Union will support you in bringing your idea to life.

Final Thoughts

My advice to new students is simple: explore and find something you genuinely enjoy. University is not just about studying, it’s also about building connections, discovering new passions, and creating memories. Societies are one of the best ways to do exactly that.
