Why I picked MSc Project Management

Date 5 January 2026

Hero shares why he decided to study MSc Project Management at the University of Northampton.

Hero Ughelie

Moving to a new place always comes with its share of adjustments, surprises, and small victories. For me, the transition has been a blend of chilly mornings, golden afternoons, and an ever-growing sense of discovery. The weather here can be unpredictable; cold one moment and strikingly sunny the next, but I’ve come to appreciate how it mirrors my experience: full of change, yet full of promise.

Finding my passion

I did not always know I would end up in project management. It has been an organic progression throughout my academic and professional journey. I originally studied Computer Science because I was fascinated by systems and how they work. I have always valued structure, clarity, and problem-solving, whether the challenges involved technology or people. As I entered the workforce, my focus shifted from working in systems to managing processes, coordinating people, and balancing expectations. That transition led me into operations, logistics, and project oversight.

In a developing country like mine, where too many initiatives are left incomplete, I began to see project management as more than a career path; it became a calling. The MSc Project Management course at the University of Northampton stood out to me because of its practical, hands-on approach and its emphasis on developing globally minded leaders. It felt like the perfect environment to refine my experience and align it with real-world impact.

The course so far..

Since starting the course, I’ve learned and improved my professional skills showcasing stronger communication, teamwork, and critical thinking abilities that are essential in today’s workplace. This course has also provided me with valuable insights into how to lead geographically dispersed teams, navigate complex procurement strategies, and align project outcomes with business vision. Emphasising applied, research-informed learning, our classes use case studies, activities, and practical applications that  make every concept come alive.

 Adapting to life at UON

As someone who has always leaned toward introversion, I wasn’t sure how easily I would adapt. Yet, the University of Northampton seems to have its own way of making people feel welcome. From classmates to flat neighbours and even strangers who offer a friendly smile, I’ve met individuals whose warmth has made settling in much easier. Conversations that begin casually often evolve into thoughtful exchanges about culture, cuisine, and the little things that make our backgrounds unique.

It’s these moments of connection that remind me that community can be found anywhere, even far from home.

Of course, there are times when I miss the familiar comforts of home, especially my favourite meal, vegetable soup. The aroma of vegetables and spices simmering together has always been a symbol of warmth and family to me. Sometimes, after a long day of classes, I catch myself wishing for just one bowl. It’s a small but heartfelt reminder of where I come from and the memories that shape who I am.

Learning at UON

Academically, the learning environment has been refreshingly different from what I was used to.

Classes at the University of Northampton are highly interactive, emphasising group work and discussion rather than traditional lectures.

Sharing ideas, challenging opinions, and collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds has not only deepened my understanding of the subjects but also expanded how I think about the world. Every session feels like an exchange, not just of knowledge, but of perspectives.

Not everything went perfectly at first. On my very first day, I almost missed my train. I can still picture myself sprinting through the station, backpack swinging, heart racing as the train doors began to close. I made it just in time, breathless, amused, and slightly embarrassed. It felt like a scene straight out of a superhero movie, the kind where Peter Parker is racing against time to get to class. Looking back, it feels like a fitting metaphor for this journey: a little chaotic, a little uncertain, but ultimately rewarding.

Now, as a master’s student and part of the team managing our university’s blog, I’ve learned to appreciate every new experience for what it is, an opportunity to grow. Every day, from adjusting to the weather to finding comfort in new friendships, adds another layer to my story.

The city continues to challenge me, inspire me, and remind me that change, while sometimes uncomfortable, often brings out the best in us. It still feels new, but now, so do I.
