Studying Multimedia Sports Journalism at UON

I am about to enter my second year studying Multimedia Sports Journalism at the University of Northampton, but why did I pick this course?

I have always had a passion for writing, from learning English in school, to studying Journalism at college, to writing articles for websites. I knew I wanted to enter the journalism and media world and university study was the next step for me, so when I found out that Northampton does a Sports Journalism course, it was a no-brainer.

Why UON?

There are many reasons why this course appealed to me. Firstly, the campus. Waterside Campus is fantastic, with modern buildings that offer great services, an area of beauty, with the river passing through and lots of greenery. It’s within walking distance of the town centre, meaning you have so much you can do without much effort.

A paved walkway leads to a sign reading "University of Northampton Waterside Campus UON," with the Creative Hub building visible on the right. Two people walk along the path.

Course Facilities

Within the campus, there are great facilities for those studying media-related courses.

Inside the Creative Hub, you will find a TV studio, radio studios, editing suites and a podcast room, as well as more areas to let your creativity shine. All of this is run by the great people in Kit Hire, who do a fantastic job of hiring out these areas to students, whether for work or to use for personal projects.

Kit Hire also allows students studying courses like mine to hire out a large selection of equipment. This includes cameras, tripods, microphones, and more. This equipment is high-quality and allows people like myself to produce great content to use for our assignments or simply to practice our craft.

Northamptonshire and its connections to sports

Finally, Northamptonshire is ideal for studying a sports-related course. The town boasts three professional sports teams from football, rugby union and cricket, something many towns and cities do not have.

Northampton Town play in the third tier of English football, and allow students to work with them to produce content and gain experience. Northampton Saints are one of the biggest clubs in European rugby at the moment, and they invite students to attend press conferences alongside professional journalists, and the Northamptonshire County Cricket Club play in the English County Cricket system and have some great stories to tell.

Outside of those clubs, there is of course Silverstone Circuit, located in South Northamptonshire which is famous for hosting the Formula 1 British Grand Prix, as well as MotoGP, BTCC and much more.
