Why Illustration?
I started the Illustration BA (Hons) degree at University of Northampton in September 2023. I had decided on doing an illustration degree as illustration is a very broad subject area that includes anything from drawing, printmaking, animation or even sculpture.
During my studies I have tried out many techniques, such as woodwork, laser cutting, riso printing, screen printing, digital painting and animating. Animating has been my favourite, so I am focusing on developing my skills further in that area at the moment. Although most of my work is digital currently, since I was encouraged to experiment with different types of media and mediums, I was able to discover what I like and dislike. This has led me to develop my creative process and to be able to think with a broader mindset when approaching a project.
Career insights from tutors and industry professionals
Additionally, throughout the course there are a lot of chances to get talks and workshops from industry professionals and have paid trips to exhibition and illustration agencies. This is really helpful in terms of understanding how the industry works, what types of roles are available in different areas and how to get in them. As an international student, this is very valuable to me as it helps me to understand the UK job market better as well.

Facilities in the Creative Hub
On campus there are a lot of facilities such as Wacom tablets, a print room, a photography room, computer labs and more that I am able to use when I need to for a project. There are also technicians available to help with any difficulties I may have. Lastly, my personal tutor, as well as the other tutors on my course, offer a lot of general and one on one feedback and guidance. They can support me with my studies and for any personal troubles as well.
Picking my degree
When deciding on a degree I knew I wanted something that would allow me to experiment and grow as an artist and give guidance on how to start a career in the creative industry. My illustration degree here has provided all of these and more, so I am glad that I had decided to come here.
