Here at the university, we have ASSIST (Additional Student Support and Inclusion Services Team) who are the team that support you through your time at the university.
They have helped me with my Academic Inclusion Report (AIR) which enables me to make better use of my studies as it tells my tutors what to expect of me and how they should include me, they’ve ensured that I get priority accommodation meaning I get the accommodation that I need, that I can have a notetaker for lectures if I need one, support with exams, ensuring that I have a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) should anything happen on campus or in halls I am able to be safe.
The support has benefited me so much simply because I have been able to actively partake in my studies and if I didn’t, I simply wouldn’t be able to if there wasn’t any guidance.
Having support getting accommodation too has been beneficial as I specifically require a ground floor flat and on campus, I have been able to have that because they have made sure I can get my requirements but not just that if you have specific needs or wants like accessible accommodation, a single-sex flat, alcohol-free, etc, ASSIST will try to ensure that your application is prioritised however it is dependent on the availability and what is offered.
ASSIST do more than just help you with your studying, they ensure that you can get around campus safely, they ensure that you feel comfortable at the university in many different ways – student support is in the name, if you are a registered ASSIST student you can ask for help, talking to them about specific issues you might be having that could affect your university experience is what they want you to do in the most basic way to say.
They will ensure your course and your university life fits your needs, no matter what it is, whether you use a wheelchair to dyslexia, the simple to the complex, ASSIST are here FOR YOU.
