Kerry’s Clearing Story at UON
For many people, going to university is the obvious choice and they will know exactly what they want to study and where to go, but for others that is not the case. You may not even think of university until you open that results envelope. If this is you and the results make you want to go to university, then you’ll go through Clearing.
My Clearing Experience
I am a mature student studying Acting for Contemporary and Devised Performance (ACDP).* I decided to not go straight to university because I wanted some experience of work in the field I thought I wanted to do. I worked in nurseries and pre-schools for 5 years, then decided University was for me, especially Northampton.
Why I chose UON
I spent a long time researching different degrees and deciding which one would suit me for what I want to do in the future. After looking through, I settled on Northampton for many reasons. This was due to what the course offered, the facilities offered by the university, and of course the free societies and sports teams. So, I went on to UCAS and applied. I recorded my self-tapes and sent them off.
Going through Clearing
Though I applied before clearing and was accepted, I was unable to accept until clearing opened. I was a little worried about going through Clearing and if I would have time to sort out my student finance. But I got in touch with the university about my concerns, and they were quick to answer any queries I had and supported me through the process.
I would recommend contacting the Admissions team who can guide you through the clearing process.
Once I was able to accept my offer, I went straight to Student Finance England and applied for my loan. The university was also very quick to answer and help me with any queries I had before starting my course. This was great because the course I choose will allow me to pursue my dream of making my own theatre company and running workshops with different groups and communities, to get people involved and having fun.
Is Clearing for you?
Clearing is a great opportunity for those who have circumstances change, or results they weren’t expecting. It is a great chance to still attend university, even if you weren’t sure about it before. You will be given lots of support from the student admissions team and your course lecturers during the whole process. Also make sure you apply for student finance as soon as your place is accepted!
It’s never too late to go to university!
* NB: Acting for Contemporary and Devised Performance (ACDP) is no longer available; however, you can apply for our new Acting for Stage and Screen BA (Hons).
