How being a Student influencer shapes the university experience

The role

Taking on the role of a student influencer at UON has significantly enhanced my academic and personal journey. The position allowed me to contribute directly to the university community by generating content that highlights student life, shared campus information, and supporting prospective and current students in understanding what UON and Northampton have to offer.

The benefits

Professionally, the experience gained by writing blogs, attending events, and assisting in promoting services, extracurricular activities, and academic life was invaluable. I developed practical skills in content creation, audience engagement, and communications. These are highly relevant in writing engaging pieces of work. Working to deadlines, tailoring messages for target audiences, and collaborating with student services provided me with real-world experiences in professional communication and digital literacy.

The role also allows students to be more proactive and reflective. I learnt how to present ideas, respond to feedback, and think critically about the types of content that serve students’ needs. These experiences help shape confidence and communication skills, and helped build a portfolio of work I can now use in future job applications.

Final thoughts

Beyond developed skills, being a student influencer gave me a deeper connection to the community and UON as a whole. It helped me feel more integrated, allowed me to meet other students with diverse backgrounds and courses, and allowed me to represent the student voice in a meaningful way.
