Why study Forensic Psychology at UON

If you decide to study Forensic Psychology, you will be exploring different psychological concepts in regard to crime, the human mind and the criminal justice system. The course is 3 years long, and there are a variety of benefits to studying this degree at UON. This course overall helps create a learning environment in both a practical and academic setting.

Benefits of the course

This course is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) which is essential for most psychology careers and further education.

On the course, you learn the core psychological modules, such as developmental psychology and statistics, but you also have course specific modules, such as criminal profiling and risk assessments. There is also a mandatory forensic placement module meaning that you get to experience real-life, hands-on work within the field. Whether that’s within a hospital or working alongside charities to support people, this opportunity allows you to build connections in the field and get first-hand experience in your chosen area.

Skills you will learn

As a part of the course, you will not only gain subject-specific knowledge, but you also gain important skills such as research design, data analysis, critical thinking and risk assessments. As a part of your degree, you must conduct your own research and studies, which allows you to independently plan, conduct and write up your own research in a topic area you are interested in.

Trips

Within the course, there are opportunities to go on some trips with the university, which can give you a better insight into different forensic contexts. As part of one trip, we visited a prison which was insightful and allowed us to see the conditions, talk to members of staff and just get an overall better understanding of what possible roles our degree can lead us to.

Career paths after graduation

As the course is accredited by the BPS, this allows you to continue onto a postgraduate degree (Masters or Doctorate) if you wish to become a chartered Forensic Psychologist.

There are a variety of different employment opportunities as well, such as working in prisons, the NHS, police, social services and many more. The possibilities are endless!

Choosing Forensic Psychology at the UON gives you a great foundation if you are fascinated by criminal behaviour, the human mind and wanting to make a difference in justice, by not only teaching you key concepts within psychology, but broadening your opportunities for networking, research and skills development.
