Esports: The Myths
Esports as a concept is mainly known for its competitive side which includes a player to sit inside and play video games and get paid for it.
However an Esports course is quite the opposite and throughout all of this I am going to debunk the myths that surround Esports and what actually happens.
“Esports is just people sitting in a room all day playing video games”
This could not be further from the truth when it comes to an Esports course at the University of Northampton. Whilst we look into some of the aspects that can be seen to develop said players, we look more into external factors that are away from the traditional esports stereotype of “just playing videogames”. This could be ideas such as events, which Esports students like myself have ran before and have been a real success. We learn about things like marketing, market research, business and more to help find the pathway we would like to go into after finishing our university studies.
“If people go onto an Esports Course their only dream is to be a professional”
Once again… wrong. Whilst most people who play video games have a dream to become a professional, most of the time it’s likely to not happen. That’s why UON help us by hosting a variety of insightful talks, taking us on trips to conventions such as Epic Lan, and also present us with opportunities other university’s could not offer. The people that usually hold the talks come from a variety of different professions and backgrounds, each of which give their own perspective on their specific market.
