A Milestone Beyond Myself
My decision to go to university was a significant milestone for my family as well as a personal goal. Being the first to walk through the gates of higher education carried immense pride, but also the weight of expectations. Can I succeed? I asked myself a lot. Will my family be proud of me? I soon realised at the University of Northampton that my story was about more than just me; it was also about removing obstacles for my family’s future generations.
Embracing the Unknown
I had to learn everything from scratch because I had no family experience with university life, including how to apply, academic structures, and even adapting to campus life. It was overwhelming at first. However, the support at UON, which included friendly lecturers and student services, have helped me feel at home. Every obstacle I faced became an opportunity to improve, and I was never travelling alone.

A Source of Inspiration
The fact that my journey serves as an inspiration to my younger cousins and siblings back home is what drives me the most.
They now view university as a viable option that they can pursue, rather than an unattainable ideal. This sense of accountability motivates me to put in more effort and seize every chance that presents itself.
Turning Pride into Purpose
I feel pressured and proud to be the first person in my family to attend university. However, I’ve learnt self-belief, independence, and resilience from it. Along with knowledge, the University of Northampton has made me feel like I belong. I’m not just “the first” anymore; I’m opening the door for a lot more.
“Being the first in my family to attend university isn’t just my achievement, it’s a door opened for others.”
