My experience with student finance

Date 25 May 2026

In this blog, Joe shares insight into his experience with Student Finance.

Joe Kelly

Having student finance, I believe, is an instrumental part of university life, as it ensures that you are financially secure during your time at university, especially if you are living in accommodation.

I have had a good experience with Student Finance within the university but also when applying for Student Finance England (SFE). It ensured that I could appropriately get the support I need financially and also the support with paying back my student loans or accommodation money.

Five students sit around a table in the Learning Hub. they are working on laptops and are engaged in discussion. Behind them, there is a large floor-to-ceiling window that displays views of Waterside campus.

Student Finance England

I thought the process for applying for Student Finance England (SFE) would be tricky, but as long as you have everything it will be a smooth and easy process. If you’re a returning student, i.e., you are going 1st to 2nd year or 2nd to 3rd year for instance, then usually it is relatively easier to sort your SFE as long as nothing changes or has changed. Though this is in my experience, it can be different for others if you change courses (like I did) or your financial situation changes.

My experience of SFE has generally been positive due to the nature of how you apply and also how fast they get back to you, they generally are quite quick which can leave you, like I did, feeling assured that you can continue with your course, not worrying about accommodation payments for example. Although rising prices can be tricky, and so budgeting often becomes something that people should do, I should do this but I don’t necessarily do it due to being able to rely on family but also my savings.

Finance at university

I haven’t had too much experience with the finance team at the university, only with the changing of the course and having an inquiry about applications for student finance, but they were helpful, even if I don’t have much of a reason to interact with them. They can help you with various aspects of finance, you can find out more about their services on the UON website.

Final words

Overall, student finance has been positive for me so far in my university journey, I think having the ability to apply for student finance is not just essential but very important, it helps you ensure that you can afford accommodation rent, supplies, and whatever else you need when you are at uni.
