University continues free education seminar series by asking how play can unlock better teaching

Date 18.02.2026

Following a strong launch of a new seminar series which brought together leaders from every level of education, the University of Northampton (UON) has announced the date for the next seminar which will focus on the important role of play and creativity in learning.

The opening seminar – Getting things done with limited resources – set the tone for the series with insights from Northampton College CEO Jason Lancaster, Advantage Schools Deputy CEO Cathy Barr, and Northampton Primary Academy Trust CEO Julia Kedwards. Anyone who missed it can watch a recording of the first seminar.

The next seminar, entitled Play and Creativity in Pedagogy takes place online between 11:30am and 1pm on Monday 2 March and will be Chaired by UON’s Emeritus Professor of Child Advocacy, Professor Eunice Lumsden.

It will examine how playful, creative approaches can unlock better teaching and learning across all phases of education.

Professor Lumsden will be joined by Kirsty Baish, Headteacher at Brington Primary, Mariana Chelariu-Smith, a Teacher from Queen Eleanor Primary School, Tracey Coles, Executive Principal, Preston Hedges, Buckton Fields and Parklands Schools, and a speaker from Moulton College to be confirmed.

Professor Lumsden said: “Bringing together educators for the first seminar from every corner of the sector allowed us to share what works, challenge assumptions, and create new ideas.

“The response so far has been fantastic—and we’re just getting started. I hope many more people will join us for future seminars and help increase the diverse range of ideas we discuss.”
