How I look after my mental health at university

Date 12 March 2026

Moving away for uni comes with pressure, independence, and a brand-new routine. So here are my rituals to help me care for my mental health while navigating university life.

Finding joy in the little things

University can be thrilling, chaotic, overwhelming, and empowering all at once. Between managing heavy course workloads, lectures, part-time jobs and trying to have an active social life, it is easy to put mental health in last place as a priority. Overtime I have incorporated a few simple rituals that keep me focused and genuinely happier while navigating the highs and lows of being a student at university.

Exploring New Cafes and shops in Town

One of my favorite ways to destress and reset on stressful weeks at uni is by taking myself out around town to try a new café or a bakery for a small treat. Whether it is going alone and sitting by myself enjoying the quiet with a nice warm drink or going with a couple of friends to talk and catch up. Some cafes like Grandbies, Butterwick and Spread are my go-to spots just because of peaceful atmosphere and the variety of sweet treat options available. In addition to cafes, I also enjoy wandering through the little shops in town and discovering new things like that cool trinket store “Vintage Guru” along with some thrift stores. It is a wonderful way I get to explore the town a little bit while also giving myself a breather.

Autumn Walks and Breathtaking Views

Going on walks has become such a fun way to not only move my body but just clear my mind and keep me grounded. It allows me to slow down with life a little because when you are at university it is easy to get wrapped up in the bustling life of being a student with so much to do and so little time. Autumn walks must be a personal favourite just because it allows me to appreciate nature seeing all the leaves change into assorted colours and the paths looking pretty.

Talking to someone when I need to

Talking to somebody whether it be catching up over the phone with family or friends or even reaching out to the support services like the mental health and counseling team that the university offers to students can be an immense help in bettering your mental health.

Moving my Body

Staying active can be the most rewarding way to look after your mental health. It can be something as simple as a short walk or a stretching session or just taking yourself to the gym for a workout. Making time for movement can help you feel focused and productive throughout the day. Taking part in a sport on the university’s sports team or a club can not only give you the opportunity to move your body but also helps you build connections with people around you and boost confidence.
