Student perks at UON

When I was starting university, I was given the choice of a student perk of either a discount on rent, catering credit, or a free laptop – it was a no brainer for me to pick the free laptop!

Why I picked the Laptop

Firstly, a laptop is a number one essential for students, whether it’s writing essays or collaborating on group projects. I didn’t want to risk using an outdated device that could potentially break mid- assignment, so with the new laptop I received I knew I had a reliable and fast device equipped with all the software I could need.

The immediate benefit of the free laptop

Secondly, this perk saved me a significant amount of money as laptops are not cheap!! As all students know budgeting is key, so accepting this perk enabled me to put that money towards other things such as books, transportation, and even some non-essential things. Financially it just made sense.

The long term benefit

More than anything, choosing the free laptop would set me up for the long term of my three years at university. It’s not just about study; I’ve used this laptop to create my portfolio and CV as well as apply and secure placements.

In a way, it’s more than a perk, it’s a tool to help me shape my future.

Whilst the other perks were tempting, the free laptop was the smartest choice for me. It was practical, valuable and something that I needed in that moment. For anyone else trying to decide, I’d say think about what will serve you every day not just what looks good in the short term.
