Our seven Intervention Strategies
All of our intervention strategy activities will be evaluated by the Activity Leader unless it’s a Spotlight Activity (indicated with a * below). In which case, the evaluation will be led by our Institute for Social Impact and Innovation. Results will be published across a range of platforms, including our own webpages, external repositories such as the Higher Education Evaluation Library, or even a conference near you!
- UNI Club: A subject-focused, 8-week attainment and skills program enhancing research and personal skills for pupils.
- Reading Warriors: Literacy program for primary and secondary schools to raise attainment and improve reading confidence.
- National Saturday Club: Collaboration with the British Film Institute to develop a Film and Screen Club enhancing subject knowledge and confidence.
- Lego Coding Club: Skills development program in collaboration with Cummins Engineering to enhance coding skills and employability knowledge.
- Revision Boost: Partnership-based GCSE maths intervention to improve male students’ grades.
- Primary SPARK Award: Social impact skills development program for primary school pupils.
- Primary School Oracy Program: Enhanced oracy and debating skills program for primary pupils.
- Widening Access Workshops*: Training workshops for staff on designing and delivering Widening Access programs.
- Primary Law Taskmaster*: Knowledge development workshops in collaboration with Warwick University to introduce primary pupils to law concepts.
- Drama in Action: Professional development program fostering attainment and skills through the arts.
- Project Party: Project management skills program for pupils.
- Living Room Lectures: Annual webinar program to support an improved understanding of Higher Education.
- Annual EDI Review: Inclusive review of event communications, web content, and student experience.
- First Generation Workshops*: Workshops targeted at students who are the first in their family to attend university.
- Taster Day Review: Inclusive and accessible review of pre-event communications and booking processes for university taster days.
- School CPD*: Teacher professional development networks supporting pupil attainment and skill development.
- Care Leavers Program*: Tailored programs supporting care leavers, including employability workshops and mentoring.
- Tackling Futures*: Key Stage 3 boys-focused project to develop self-efficacy and study practices.
- Primary Ignite Your Future*: Insight sessions to explore progression to Higher Education and potential careers.
- Black Leaders Program*: Workshops exploring community, identity, and leadership to foster a sense of belonging.
- Representative Student Ambassador Program*: Recruitment of ambassadors reflecting the diversity of the university’s population.
- Integrated Foundation Year Enhancement*: Collaborative activity to improve continuation and belonging for foundation year students.
- Timetabling Optimisation: Responsive timetabling to better accommodate diverse student demographics.
- Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) Steering Group*: Management and evolution of the PAT model to enhance support.
- Universal Design for Learning: Optimising teaching and learning based on insights into human learning.
- Targeted Mentoring*: Peer and professional mentoring opportunities for APP target cohorts.
- APP Advocates and Ambassadors Programmes: Our Advocates programme supports staff to understand and apply the APP in their role. Our Ambassador programme funds staff-time to research or deliver a micro-intervention that enhances our learning of what works in APP at UON.
- Robust Communications Plan: Development of a clear communications plan, that engages all stakeholders impacted by this APP.
- Student Voice Strategy*: Embedding student voice into university strategy and decision-making practices.
- Trust Guidelines: Implementing trust as a core tenet in staff-student interactions.
- Student Career Coaches: Peer-led career development framework targeting APP cohorts.
- Care Leavers Employability Support*: Bespoke employability and job placement support for care leavers.
- Career Registration Survey: Tracking student career intentions and progression.
- Student Ambassador Programme Evaluation*: A collaboration with University of Bedfordshire to evaluate our Student Ambassador programme.
- Financial Support Package*: Targeted funds to support all our APP target cohorts at each stage of their student lifecycle.
- Mental Health Charter Status: Embedding a whole-provider approach to mental health and wellbeing.
- Transition Support: Support for students transitioning into university to improve mental health and wellbeing.
- Suicide Safer Framework: Operationalising a proactive approach to suicide prevention and postvention.
- Learnings from Manspace: Incorporating findings from “Manspace” to tailor mental health services.
Evaluation:
This evaluation will be co-designed with APP stakeholders, Activity Leaders, and Institute for Social Impact and Innovation as part of an all-encompassing evaluation of the Mental Health interventions. Due to considerations of privacy dissemination will be limited to the APP Steering Group and publication of the Mental Health Charter Status.

- APP Integration into IT Strategy*: Ensuring APP priorities are central in IT governance and decision-making.
- Data Governance Working Group*: Supporting effective data collection, analysis, and usage to improve student outcomes.
- SITS Implementation*: Rolling out a new student records system to streamline data and support processes.
- Value Added Platform*: Benchmarking program outcomes against sector averages for quality enhancement.
Evaluation:
This intervention will be evaluated as part of an all-encompassing evaluation of the University-wide Digital and Data Strategy by our IT Strategy Board in partnership with of our Institute for Social Impact and Innovation. The evaluation will be co-designed to ensure it meets the needs of the APP whilst ensuring that institutional data governance is appropriate. Results will be published across a range of platforms, including our own webpages, external repositories, or even a conference!
