Welcome to BSc (Hons) Midwifery – January 2026.

Midwifery is a unique and rewarding career, that will allow you to be in the privileged position of working closely with pregnant persons, women and their families during pregnancy and childbirth, promoting health and wellbeing. You will commence a curriculum based on the Nursing and Midwifery Council Standards for pre-registration Midwifery education. The 2024 curriculum continues to build on the University of Northampton’s innovative active blended learning approach and will centre on case-studies helping you to explore the importance of cultural competence, evidence-led practice and professional caring to ensure you can provide effective midwifery care.

Welcome and Induction

Your timetable will be provided on your first day at university.

Equipment

You will be measured for your uniform during the first few weeks of starting your course. Midwifery students wear a uniform when on a ‘physical’ placement – usually situated in a hospital. You will be required to wear flat, black shoes. Your first set of uniform (excluding shoes) is funded – so free of charge to individual students. You can order any replacement or additional items at your own cost.

You will be given a suggested reading list of literature that may assist you during your course, but we are not recommending that you purchase all or any of these as most are available in the University or hospital libraries.

Enhancing skills, building networks and engaging in the wider University community

You may wish to enagage with the Student Union’s Midwifery Society during your time at Northampton.
