Meet Ryan, an Artificial Intelligence and Data Science student who gained valuable professional experience alongside his studies through his role as a Career Coach within Student Futures. Supporting students with CVs, LinkedIn profiles, placements and job applications, Ryan developed a deeper understanding of how employers assess candidates and what makes an effective application. The role strengthened his confidence, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, while giving him first-hand insight into recruitment and the changing job market. His experience as a Career Coach not only enabled him to support other students in achieving their career goals but also helped him become more adaptable and confident in pursuing his own professional development.

Can you tell us about your role as a Career Coach and what a typical day looked like?

Each day started by setting up the Student Futures area, displaying posters, advertisements, and information about upcoming events. I then checked for updates, including student queries, emails, and any marketing or administrative tasks that needed attention. The rest of the day was spent supporting students through drop-in appointments, carrying out CV reviews, answering career questions, and helping with job applications. During busy periods, I often worked with multiple students at once while ensuring each received high-quality support.

What did you enjoy most about working with students at the University of Northampton?

The most rewarding part of the role was gaining insight into how employers assess applications and make recruitment decisions. This knowledge improved my own job applications and allowed me to give students practical advice based on employer expectations. I also enjoyed the supportive team environment. Working alongside Michelle, Claire and the other Career Coaches created a collaborative atmosphere where we could rely on one another and provide the best possible support for students.

What were the most common challenges students came to you with, and how did you help them overcome them?

The most common enquiries were about placements, CV reviews, and LinkedIn profiles. Many students needed guidance with finding placements, tailoring CVs, writing cover letters, and preparing applications. I focused on identifying each student’s strengths, experiences, and career goals before helping them create applications that matched the requirements of specific roles. For CV reviews, I personalised my advice to each student rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.

What’s the one piece of advice you think every student should hear when it comes to their career or employability?

The job market changes constantly, so adaptability is one of the most valuable skills a student can develop. Tailor every application to the role, stay informed about industry trends and continue building new skills. Employers value candidates who are proactive, willing to learn and able to adapt to changing expectations.

What would you say to a student who’s unsure whether they should drop in to see a Career Coach?

I would encourage every student to take the first step, even if they are unsure what they need help with. Simply asking what services are available can open the door to support with CVs, LinkedIn profiles, job applications, placements, interview preparation and much more. Many students are surprised by how much help Student Futures can provide. I would also remind students that Student Futures continues to support graduates after they leave university, which is something many students are not aware of.

What’s been your proudest moment as a Career Coach?

My proudest moment was helping a friend through every stage of the recruitment process—from reviewing their CV and job application to preparing for their interview. Seeing them secure a placement was incredibly rewarding because I could see the direct impact the service had on their success. It was equally satisfying to know that several other friends also benefited from Student Futures and achieved placements.

How do you feel you developed your own skills, experience and confidence whilst in this role, and what did this enable you to go on to do yourself?

This role significantly improved my confidence and understanding of recruitment. I became much more effective at tailoring applications, communicating professionally and understanding employer expectations. I also developed stronger adaptability, teamwork and problem-solving skills, which encouraged me to take on additional technology projects and continue developing professionally.
