Technician Commitment

The Technician Commitment is a sector-wide initiative led by the Science Council and supported by the Gatsby Foundation to help address key challenges facing technical staff working in teaching and research.

The University of Northampton is a signatory to the Technician Commitment along with 115 universities and research institutions from across the UK that recognise the important role technicians play in research, teaching and supporting students.

Action Plan

The University’s Technician Commitment Steering Group is currently developing an action plan that commits to supporting technicians across the University in the following areas:

• Visibility – Ensuring that all technicians within the organisation are identifiable and that the contribution of technicians is visible within and beyond the institution
• Recognition – Supporting technicians to gain recognition through professional registration
• Career development – Enabling career development opportunities for technicians through the provision of clear, documented career pathways
• Sustainability – Ensuring the future sustainability of technical skills across the organisation and that technical expertise is fully utilised
