University of Northampton’s music department launches new record label

Date 16.11.2015

The University of Northampton’s School of The Arts is proud to announce the launch of Avenue Music, a new record label set up and run by the music department.

Designed to showcase the work of the department’s BA Popular Music students and the very best music that Northamptonshire has to offer, the label will be home to an eclectic range of artists covering everything from pop-punk to sweet soul, delta blues to dubstep Vivaldi.

Avenue Music will be run by third year BA Popular Music students as part of their course, and students will oversee signings and work on artist development, recording, marketing, press and PR and distribution. The label will use the social enterprise model, with profits from the business being reinvested for the benefit of students.

Dr Nathan Wiseman-Trowse, Associate Professor in Popular Music, explained: “Avenue Music is born from the talent that we have witnessed through student assessment over the last few years. Having our own record label within the Music department is both a chance to give students experience of releasing their own work commercially as well as being an opportunity to showcase some of the amazing music that comes out of Northamptonshire. Avenue Music will be a 21st century label, showcasing the best of local talent on an international stage.”

Avenue Music will be holding a launch party on the Northampton Racecourse on Thursday 26 June, between 2pm and 7:30pm. The afternoon will feature live music, and attendees will receive a copy of First, Avenue Music’s first CD sampler. Entry is free.

Artists performing will include: The Cellars, A Date With Bacon, Yoshe, The Supersonics, James Robinson, Esther Sinclair, Jordan Soul, Gloriosa Fusione, Stephen Mone, Josh Cooke, George Clarke and John Cadden-Lawrence.
