From climate change and clean energy, to food security and sustainable growth, some of the world’s most pressing challenges will be examined during University of Northampton’s (UON) international conference on sustainable development and energy transition later this month.
UON’s School of Law, Criminology and Criminal Justice, in collaboration with the Human Rights Lawyers Association (HRLA) and supported by the Global Human Rights Centre (GHRC), will host the Global Conference on Sustainable Development and Energy Transition on Friday 28 August 2026.
Taking place online from 9am to 5pm (UK time), the conference will bring together scholars, policymakers, practitioners and researchers from around the world to explore critical issues including sustainable development, clean energy, climate justice, resilience and environmental governance.
One of the conference’s highlights will be the internationally recognised climate scientist and United Nations Champion of the Earth, Dr Balgis Osman Elasha, who will discuss Climate Change, Sustainable Development, and Energy Transition: An African Perspective.
The event will be chaired by UON’s Senior Lecturer in Law, Dr Cynthia Umezulike, who said: “Addressing the challenges of climate change and sustainable development requires global collaboration and innovative thinking.
“This conference provides a valuable opportunity for experts and practitioners from diverse disciplines to share knowledge, exchange ideas and explore practical solutions that can help create a more sustainable and equitable future.”
Other keynote speakers include UON’s Professor Simon Sneddon speaking on Rethinking Sustainability in the Age of Planetary Limits and Professor Uma Outka from University of Kansas School of Law who will be presenting a discourse on The Evolving Role of Climate Change in Energy Transitions.
