The new smart casual? – Dr Julie King to preside over athleisure conference

Date 12.11.2018

One of the biggest fashion phenomenons of recent years will come under the spotlight at an industry conference chaired by the University of Northampton’s Head of Fashion.

Dr Julie King will be in the top seat at the Association of Suppliers to the British Clothing Industry’s Athleisure Conference, which takes place in Nottingham on Wednesday 14 November.

Described as the ‘new smart casual’, the athleisure trend sees people wearing clothing intended for workouts and other athletic activities being worn in everyday settings, such as at work, or when you are out shopping and socialising.

Dr King said: “The rise of athleisure has been a rapid one, and you don’t have to be the next Usain Bolt to wear performance sportswear around the house or to take the dog for a walk.

“Recent developments in smart fabric technology, dress down cultures which have pervaded many workplaces and an increasing number of us working from home have meant that we are wearing less formal wear these days.

“Coupled with the rise of mindfulness and clean eating, there has never been a better time to find the right athleisure outfit to meet your sporting and relaxation needs.”
