The BIG Budget event: Your questions answered

Date 1.03.2021

Join us on budget day, Wednesday 3 March, for expert comment from the University of Northampton’s economic and political experts.

With the Government roadmap to recovery announced on Monday 22 February, all eyes are now firmly on what the Spring Budget will hold for the economic recovery of the UK.

Join Marco Gundermann, Subject Leader for Economics, International Relations and Development, and David Waller, Senior Lecturer in Politics, and International Relations, for their analysis of Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak’s Spring Budget, and what it could mean for people and business in Northamptonshire.

Marco Gundermann, Subject Leader for Economics, International Relations, and Development, said: “The Spring budget is set to be one of the most important budgets since World War Two. Economically and socially we’ve been fighting a war on coronavirus, I’m eagerly awaiting the Chancellor’s economic plans to support the UK through what we hope are the final months of this.

“Personally, I hope that the budget focuses on growth support, with key policy decisions which support getting public finances on a sustainable footing, and avoiding a return to austerity. We shall see what the Chancellor presents on 3 March.”

David Waller, Senior Lecturer in Politics, Economics, International Relations said: “This budget carries with it an outstanding amount of political clout. The budget is an excellent barometer of political priorities and commitments, and this budget has the added complexity of the pandemic.

“Many people will be more concerned than ever on the impact of the budget on their finances, with questions about the extension of furlough, stamp duty schemes, and the uplifted universal credit eagerly awaited by the public. It proves to be an exciting day, and the Faculty of Business and Law experts are ready to share their analysis in an easy to understand way.”
