Ready to hit the runway – student designers gear up for Graduate Fashion Week

Date 30.05.2018

Students from the University of Northampton will be presenting their final year collections to industry heavyweights at Graduate Fashion Week (GFW) 2018 in London.

Twenty undergraduates from the Fashion, Textiles for Fashion and Footwear & Accessories courses will be showcasing their collections on Monday 4 June at The Old Truman Brewery in Shoreditch.

You can view a selection of the designs in the University’s GFW brochure. The photographs were taken at the University’s new Waterside Campus, which opens to students in September.

Textiles for Fashion student, Hannah Guiver has designed a children’s clothing range for the show, pictured above.

She said: “It feels great to have been chosen to showcase my collection on the catwalk, and being a children’s wear designer it feels like more of an achievement as adult clothes are always dominant at the show.

“Children’s clothing has always appealed to me as I work in a fun, colourful and playful way. It allows me to create a range of prints which attract both the child and the parent.”

Hannah added: “My collection is inspired by a tropical rainforest. I began by collating imagery of brightly coloured birds which lead to drawing and developing further ideas and shapes. I have used a variety of media within my collection such as digital print, hand screen printing, knitting and weaving. I have also used ‘flocking’ within one garment, as this adds further texture and playfulness of my collection.”

Hannah hopes Graduate Fashion Week will help to get her noticed by industry, adding: “I would really like to get a full-time job in the print/design industry working for a children’s wear company, creating fun and exciting prints for a brand.”
