Media students’ films get the red carpet treatment

Date 1.06.2023

Media Production students had their first taste of industry recognition, when their best work was screened as part of a film festival.

The films by Creative, Film, Television and Digital Media Production students formed part of their final year show, the first such event for this subject area. An extra highlight for the students was having this show as part of the recent Northampton Film Festival.

Of the 11 films submitted by 10 students, 4 certificates were awarded by UON Vice Chancellor Anne-Marie Kilday for their overall commitment to the course in these categories:

  • Excellence in Creative Thinking and Initiative – Chloe Court.
  • Excellence in Engagement and Achievement – Crystal Walker Spring.
  • Excellent in Dependability, Dedication and Focus – Ben Warner.
  • Excellent in Professionalism, Resilience, and Collaboration – Kechae West.

At the event, the students also learned first-hand about working in the industry from special guest, BAFTA-nominated sound mixer Dean Humphrey, for a live Q&A.

Kechae says: “I feel very proud to receive a certificate. It was very unexpected, but it made me feel happy and accomplished that the skills of resilience, professionalism, and collaboration I have attained throughout my course had been recognised by my lecturers and tutor, who have always supported me. At times, I would think about not feeling confident or good enough, but the course has helped me recognise my strengths and what I aspire to do and become in the future, and how these core skills will help me within my career.

“My time at UON has been a good experience, I have learnt so much and met some great people. Being on a creative course has allowed me to learn different aspects of production, be engaged, practical and collaborative. The course is innovative and gives you a lot of opportunities to network, learn new skills, enhance your knowledge, and to grow as a creative individual.”

Ben adds: “I am honoured to win the certificate for dependability, dedication and focus. It means a lot as it has shown me that my hard work throughout my time at the university has paid off and has therefore increased my self-confidence.

“UON has equipped me with the skills to be prepared to venture into the world of media production after university. I have learnt an abundance about the media industry, how to handle equipment, and the whole production process. This has led to me being employed as a videographer for Gymshark, which wouldn’t have been possible without the support and guidance that I have been given at UON.”
