Free screening to mark Black History Month

Date 20.01.2017

University of Northampton staff, students and the public will be able to mark February’s US Black History Month by attending a special free documentary screening.

The Stuart Hall Project charts the story of one of the most influential and esteemed cultural theorists of a generation, and takes the viewer on a roller coaster ride through the upheavals, struggles and turning points that made the 20th century the century of campaigning, and of global political and cultural change.

It will be screened at the Park Campus event, which will also include a chance to discuss the film and enjoy some refreshments. The event runs from 6pm to 9pm on Wednesday 8 February,

The event has been organised by the University of Northampton, Northamptonshire Rights and Equalities Council, the Race Act 40 project and Northampton University of College’s Union, which is also sponsoring the evening.

Nick Cartwright, Branch Secretary of UCU and a Director of NREC, said: “American Black History Month reminds us of the power that civil rights activists can have in creating social change.

“NREC carries out invaluable work in promoting social justice and challenging all forms of discrimination in our county and I am excited that our staff union can work with it to advance these aims.

“By showcasing the work of the academic Stuart Hall, we aim to highlight the importance of identity and the responsibility we as an academy have to ensure that identity is not used as a tool of oppression.”
