Simon completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Leicester gaining a BA (hons) in History; he continued his study at the institution completing a Postgraduate Diploma in History. Following this, Simon studies at the University of Northampton undertaking his Postgraduate Certificate in Education with Qualified Teacher Status and then his MA in Education.
Simon joined the University of Northampton in 2019 after teaching in primary schools across Northamptonshire and Leicestershire holding posts such as Subject Leader, Phase Leader and Assistant Headteacher.
Simon is a Deputy Head of the School of Education, Society and Culture and also the Course Leader for the BA Primary Education 5-11 (QTS). Additionally, he is a tutor on the Postgraduate Certificate in Education international (iQTS) and Primary Assessment Only Route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Simon has subject leadership responsibility for Computing across these courses.
Simon is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an External Examiner for the University of Worcester on their Teaching in Primary Education (with QTS) BA (Hons) Top Up course.
Simon teaches several different subject areas including Professional Studies, Computing, Physical Education and History. He is also a Personal Academic Tutor and was awarded a university STAAR Award for this in 2026, a Moderation Tutor during school-based placements and a Dissertation Supervisor.
Simon’s research interests include Physical Education; for his Masters in Education thesis, Simon explored undergraduate teachers’ perceptions on their preparedness to deliver curriculum Physical Education on completion of their Initial Teacher Education. For his PhD, working with the Centre for Educational Research (CER), Simon is exploring Physical Education globally considering the types of knowledge ‘consciously incompetent’ teachers require to become better prepared to teach the subject irrespective of their primary teaching context.
Simon is also interested in the role of developing technologies in education particularly Extended Reality and Artificial Intelligence use within in teaching and learning. He is the Extended Reality Special Interest Group lead as part of the University of Northampton’s Centre for Active Digital Education (CADE).
