Staff Profile

  • Robert has been with UON since January 2024 and currently works as a Technician Demonstrator with a specialisation in Electronics. Robert supports practical teaching sessions from Levels 4 to 7 and leads on some Level 4 and Level 5 practical sessions.

    Since joining UON, Robert has overseen the refurbishment of the Electronics and Computer Engineering Laboratory, introduced a comprehensive Induction Handbook for the ECE Laboratory, and collaborated with academic colleagues to revise student assessment and the content of practical modules.

    Robert is a passionate member of the Technician Commitment working group, leading on Career Development. In addition, Robert is a First Aider, a Mental Health First Aider and holds an IOSH Managing Safety certificate.

    Robert obtained his first degree, a BEng (Hons) in Electronic Engineering with Medical Electronics in 1991 and Masters’ Degree in Electronic Engineering in 1994, both from University of Kent. After a diverse career in industry (medical instrumentation and defence), Robert entered higher education:

    • Experimental Psychology at Oxford, with a particular interest in developmental psychology (BabyLab) and multisensory perception.
    • Engineering at University of Kent, with a particular interest in developing powered wheelchair assistive technology, and first-year practical projects.
    • Engineering at University of Northampton, with a focus on teaching, student support, and practical experiments.

    Robert’s professional interests lie in the use of technology to assist people with physical disabilities and people with communication difficulties. Specifically, helping people with mobility and coordination impairments, and the neurodivergent community.

    Outside of work, Robert continues to advocate for autistic people, which he has done since 2010. He also enjoys writing short stories and poetry, model making, and engaging in role-playing games.
