Dr Emmanuel Vanger’s research sits at the intersection of governance, sustainability, resilience, traceability, and complex socio-environmental systems, with a particular focus on understanding how institutions, policies, technologies, and communities respond to interconnected development challenges. His work spans climate resilience and anticipatory governance, farmer–herder relations and transhumance governance, conflict and peacebuilding, sustainable livelihoods, migration and mobility, disaster risk reduction, supply-chain traceability, circular economy systems, and sustainable development in Africa and beyond. His recent research has increasingly explored the role of digital technologies, including traceability systems, blockchain, artificial intelligence, and predictive analytics, in strengthening governance, transparency, accountability, and resilience across agricultural, environmental, and industrial systems. Through projects such as the UK FCDO-funded Traceable and Circular Leather Production (TCLP) initiative, he has contributed to advancing knowledge on sustainable value chains, environmental governance, and responsible production systems.
At the University of Northampton, his doctoral supervision and research leadership further reflect these interests, supporting studies in climate adaptation, sustainability transitions, project management, governance, organisational resilience, sustainable business practices, infrastructure and development, and the application of emerging technologies to address societal and environmental challenges. Drawing on institutional theory, resilience thinking, systems approaches, and sustainability science, his research aims to generate policy-relevant evidence that strengthens institutional capacity, enhances decision-making, improves traceability and accountability mechanisms, and supports resilient and sustainable development outcomes across local, national, regional, and global contexts.
