Find your people at UON

Here at the University of Northampton, there are over 60 societies at your disposal, and there really is something for everyone.

Thanks to our Students’ Union, we are one of very few Universities in England to offer these completely free – so any uniform or equipment you may need is provided for you!

What sort of societies are available?

The societies here cover a wide range of areas, such as sport, history, anime, computing, gaming, politics, religion and so much more. A list of these societies is available on the University of Northampton Student Union website, which provides a much more in-depth description of what to expect when joining one of these groups.

Why did I join a society?

Joining a society has many direct benefits, such as introducing you to new people, thus helping you to make friends when starting at University, giving you a sense of belonging, helping you to developing skills in teamwork, communication and planning, as well as other society-specific abilities (such as experience in a sport or subject area). Being a part of any society looks great on a CV when applying for jobs, as it demonstrates your skillset and your ability to work with others. The Student Union also hosts many events for each society, which are always great fun and completely free. Overall, who wouldn’t want to become a larger part of their University community? I decided to join the Model United Nations Society and never looked back.

My Experience.

The Model United Nations Society is a political roleplaying group that is great for those who are planning a career in politics or a similar area, or simply those interested in politics and debating. The society has one or two people roleplaying as leaders of a country in the UN, and their goal is to get a bill passed in a vote. This is great fun and also an amazing experience for those involved. One of my fondest memories of being at University was when the Student Union organised an event for all politics societies to meet in the Engine Shed and watch the US 2024 Presidential Election live, even providing drinks. It was great discussing politics with several like-minded people at this event.

How to join a Society.

During Freshers’ Week, the societies fair hosts all of these societies, and you can join them here. If you miss this opportunity, you can apply to join a society on the Students’ Union Website.
