Why I chose the laptop perk

Date 2 April 2026

My blog is going to tell you about why I decided to pick the laptop perk when I joined in my first year and how this has helped.

In this blog I am going to talk to you about both why I chose the laptop perk and how this has helped me with my studies while at the University of Northampton.

Why I chose the laptop perk

When I heard we got a free student perk when joining the university, it was a huge selling point as no other university I had looked at had offered something like this. It was a difficult decision as to which one I wanted to pick as they are all very useful perks and all of them would help me in saving money in other areas.

However, after thinking it through I did ultimately decide to pick the free laptop perk, I arrived at enrolment and collected it the same day. It was easy to set up and is a good quality laptop. I picked it because my course requires a lot of paperwork and editing based work, whether that’s editing short films or planning podcasts, so I knew that in my case if I didn’t have a laptop of my own, I would personally struggle to handle my workload.

It also meant I had my own device to store my work and something I could use in my free time when I needed that space to relax and separate from my work.

How has this helped me? And Advice

My laptop has helped me a huge amount on multiple fronts, it has allowed me to save money on having to buy my own laptop which I could spend on other things like food and leisure time. It has also helped me keep up with the tasks needed on my course, when I have had to edit music videos, short films etc, it gave me a device to download my editing software and save my production documentations.

The advice I would give to a future student picking their perk, would be to think carefully about your situation and your course, and measure the pros and cons of each perk against what you need for your course and what would be most helpful to you out of them all. At the end of the day everyone’s situations are different and all the of the perks are amazing choices.
