Money Matters
For most students, money is at the top of their list when it comes to things to consider when attending university. The cost of tuition, accommodation, and daily expenses will likely be the first time students will need to manage money independently and learn how to budget. It can feel like a lot to manage in such a short space of time.
Our role here in the Financial Guidance Team at the University of Northampton is to help you navigate managing your money and providing you with financial support when you need it most.
What help is available?
Here are just some of the key reasons students may ask for support from the Financial Guidance Team during their time at University:
Understanding Student Finance.
We can help provide support and clarity around the Student Finance application process. This includes checking you have received your full entitlement to funding, liaising with funding bodies where appropriate and guidance around other government-assessed funding (such as support from the NHS). If you need to transfer courses, take a study break or repeat modules, we can also support you in understanding the financial implications of programme changes and how this may affect your eligibility to receive funding.
Additional University funding.
There are several awards, funds and loans that our team offers that you may be eligible to apply for to help alleviate some of the financial pressures whilst you study. These include a hardship fund, care leaver/estranged student awards and emergency loans. You can find out more on the university website about what’s on offer.
Budgeting & money management.
We can help you create a budget whilst you study and give you guidance on money-saving tips and tricks. This can include things like cheap and easy recipes, understanding your bills and discounts and offers. Our Student Money Mentors regularly create content for our Instagram page to help improve students’ spending habits and the Money Matters blog has its own budget creation feature to help you build your own budget. We also run regular events like National Student Money Week to provide fun and engaging activities about money (plus there’s always freebies on offer)
Contacting the team for help couldn’t be easier. Just email: money@northampton.ac.uk or call 01604 893299. If you’re a current student, check out our pages on the Student Hub for more ways we can support you.
