Questions to ask and what to look for

Attending a university open day is an important step in choosing where to study. It’s a chance to explore the campus, meet staff and students and get a genuine feel for university life. However, making the most of your visit requires preparation. Knowing what questions to ask and what aspects to evaluate can help make a important decision about your future.

Plan Ahead: Research before you go

Before visiting, research the university’s courses, campus facilities and student life. Have a list of priorities, whether it’s academic support, accommodation, or extracurricular activities. This ensures you focus on what’s most important to you.

Ask The Right Questions

To get the most valuable insights, ask targeted questions about different aspects of university life. Instead of asking “Is this a good course” try asking “What career paths have graduates from this course pursued?” Other key questions include:

  • How is the course assessed (Is it exams, coursework or practical projects)?
  • What are the class sizes, and how much contact time is there with lecturers?
  • What type of student support services are available?

Explore the campus and facilities

Take note of the campus environment, is it somewhere you feel comfortable? Visit the library, study spaces and Student Accommodations. The University of Northampton offers modern facilities, including Waterside Campus, which features learning spaces and student-friendly environments.

Go to Subject Talks and Taster Sessions

Lecturers at the University often host sessions about courses and their content. This is a great way to understand course expectations, teaching styles and whether the subject aligns with your interests and learning preferences.

Talk to current students

Current students can provide honest insights into university life. Ask about their experiences with academics, social life, and support services. Their perspective can help you gauge whether the university culture is right for you.

Review costs and financial support

Understand tuition fees, accommodation costs and living expenses. The University offers various scholarships, bursaries and financial aid options, so ask about the support available to you.

Trust your instincts

After gathering all the information, reflect on how you felt about the University. Did it feel like a place you’d be happy and thrive?

Trusting your instincts are just about as important as the facts.

By planning, asking the right questions, and thoroughly exploring your options, you can make an informed decision and choose the University of Northampton with confidence.
