Belonging at University
Before I came to university, I worried about whether I would fit in. Would I make friends? Would I find my place? At UON, I quickly discovered belonging is not just about study, but who you find and surround yourself with.
Welcome Week
For me it started in Welcome Week. I was nervous walking into my first society fair, but it turned out to be the best decision I made. Joining a society gave me an instant group of people who shared my interests, and from there friendships grew naturally. I never expected how quickly strangers would become close friends.
The Course Lecturers
Lecturers also made a big difference especially my main Tutor. They were approachable, friendly and genuinely interested in how students were doing, both inside and outside of the classroom. It made me feel seen, not just as another statistic, but as someone with potential. When you know staff believe in you; and ensure your happiness, it is easier to believe in yourself.

Living in Halls
Halls were another part of that belonging. Living alongside other students meant late-night chats in the kitchen, shared culture, food, and plenty of laughs. Even though we came from different backgrounds, we created our own little family away from home.
Belonging at UON
What I love about UON is that it feels personal. It is not just a campus you walk through. It’s a place where people remember your name, support your goals, and make you feel part of something bigger. Looking back, the sense of belonging I found at UON shaped my whole university journey. It gave me the confidence to try new things, take on challenges, and grow as a person. If you are starting at UON, my advice is simple: get involved, reach out, and let yourself be part of the community. Belonging is waiting for you here.
