Living in a Large Ensuite at UON
Living in a large ensuite means I have plenty of space to make my room like home, this can be done simply by how I organise my desk, my cupboard space, and my shelf space.
I have added some fairy lights that sit on my windowsill behind my monitor. My monitor stands at the curve of my desk so I that when I move myself into a relaxed position, it makes me feel like I am at home rather than my university accommodation.
My desk has all my essentials on but it is not cluttered, allowing me to easily grab what I want. I love to read, so having my books there as well as on my shelf space makes it feel homely, especially when reading with just my fairy lights and my lamp on; making the vibe feel immaculate.
Home away from home
My whole space feels lived in and organised, which is something I often feel very comfortable with. It allows me to come back from lectures, volunteering, or whatever else I have been up to and feel like I am at home, almost suspending my belief that it’s university accommodation unless I look out the window.
I tend to keep to the same way of living, even if it differs from being at home, making that routine allows me to feel like I am going home from a long day of lectures, etc. By having set routines, it keeps me feeling good. For example, I might have a routine of eating at 5:30pm and then I can chill out until whenever I go to bed.
Speaking of, getting comfortable bedding and pillows are always important! Having a good nights sleep makes it feel more like you’re at home in a comfortable bed – instead of a bed at a hotel for instance where it’s practically designed for the everyday person!
My Advice
My very best suggestion for making your accommodation feel like home is to bring all of your essentials, don’t settle for basic things, if it is practical and you need it take it! However, you need to be wary of the space you have available, that means making sure you know roughly what your room would look like, how much space is in your closet or the shelves you have, etc. This will vary depending on whether you are residing in a townhouse, flat, or even a studio.
With my ensuite room I know roughly what space I have, and in my room I know I have everything I need. I keep anything medical in one place, and anything related to my studies in another.
