My student journey at UON

Starting university is exciting, but let’s be honest, it’s also overwhelming. I arrived at university in my first year full of nerves, questions and anticipation. I didn’t know what to expect, and I wasn’t even sure if I’d chosen the right course. But now, as a final-year student, I can confidently say that choosing UON was a good decision.

My journey began like many others, awkward icebreakers in Welcome week, late-night chats in the halls, and slowly figuring out where everything on campus was located. It didn’t take long for things to come together. The friendly atmosphere and supportive staff made me feel comfortable.

Three students are sitting at a table in the Learning Hub, using laptops and books. They are engaged in study or discussion.

Academically, UON has amazing lecturers. The teaching staff were approachable and genuinely invested in my progress and learning. Whether it was assignment feedback, careers advice, deadlines, or caring for my wellbeing, I always knew I could turn to my main lecturer. I particularly appreciate how our course incorporated real-life projects and encouraged openness and creativity, things that will extend into my career.

But university isn’t all about deadlines. One of my most important parts of university was engaging in student life. I joined the anime and esports society in my first year and it quickly became a second home. It gave me a chance to meet new people, make lifelong friends and eventually take on volunteer roles. Those experiences helped me grow in ways the classroom couldn’t, boosting my confidence, time management and communication skills.

Three students relax on steps outside the Learning Hub at Waterside campus on a sunny day. Two sit on the steps, while the other crouches. They are looking into the distance off-camera and smiling.

Looking back on three years, despite hardships across the board. I am proud of how far I have come.

I arrived not knowing if I would fit in, unsure of who I was, and I’m leaving with a new sense of clarity, confidence and strong sense of direction.

Alex is a third-year student pursuing a degree in esports. While many associate esports with gaming or a ‘Hobby’, this course goes far beyond that, blending theory with practical experience. Her main focus in this course is performance psychology and coaching, which she finds incredibly fascinating!
