Date 13.11.2015

The University of Northampton has partnered with the University of Madras in India to offer a joint MSc programme in International Environmental Management.

The programme was officially launched by Professor Nick Petford, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Northampton and Professor R. Thandavan, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras. The event was held at the British Deputy High Commission in Chennai on Tuesday 18 September 2013.

The programme is delivered through a blended learning format consisting of online resources and intensive face-to-face tuition at the University of Madras. The course is flexible by design allowing students to study at a pace which suits their circumstances and allows them to read for a UK degree whilst living and working in India.

The MSc in International Environmental Management has been specifically designed to meet the needs and ever growing sustainability demands of both developed and rapidly developing countries. The course aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge at a postgraduate level that will enable them to become effective environmental managers. They will also be trained to undertake the research required to tackle environmental issues.

Professor Petford commented: “Against the backdrop of environmental concerns like global climate change, sea-level rise, and pollution, there is an increasing demand around the world for highly skilled managers of the environment. The Indian Subcontinent is particularly sensitive to climate variability, while its environment, society, industry and agriculture are potentially vulnerable to future climate change. Even the Government of India has identified environmental management as a priority area that needs to be worked upon. Thus, we have formulated this joint MSc programme keeping in mind the opportunity that the students would get to develop the skills and knowledge at postgraduate level enabling them to become effective environmental managers.”
