County’s young designers shine in 2026 University of Northampton x Swaysland Award for Design Excellence

Date 29.06.2026

More than 250 young creatives from across Northamptonshire have showcased their talent, imagination and design skills as part of the University of Northampton x Swaysland Award for Design Excellence.

This year’s competition invited students to create innovative footwear designs inspired by nature and the world around them. From colourful wildlife and blooming flowers to natural materials and organic shapes, entries demonstrated an impressive range of creative ideas and artistic flair.

The competition attracted submissions from 13 schools across Northamptonshire, with students from Reception through to Year 13 taking part.

The 2026 judging panel were tasked with identifying the standout entries, evaluating imaginative thinking and use of colour, as well as creativity and design flair. Judges included John Green, a creative professional with 40 years of experience in the footwear industry; Emmeline Child, University of Northampton Course Leader for Fashion, Textiles and Footwear; and Alexis Taylor, Head of Art and Design at the University of Northampton.

The judging panel was delighted by both the quality and originality of the designs, highlighting the wealth of emerging creative talent across the county.
