Student Perks: Explained
As a first year home student you are offered the choice of picking one student perk as part of your enrolment:
- £500 Accommodation Discount
- £500 Catering Credit
- A Free Laptop
I decided to pick the £500 accommodation discount as I knew going forward, accommodation would be a costly essential, by picking this student perk I could reduce any financial worries I might have.

The accommodation discount is split into 2 x £250 discounts which are spread over the first and second semesters. Having this discount spread into instalments allowed me to manage my budget more evenly throughout the academic year. Before the discount, all of my maintenance loan would have gone to my accommodation leaving me with little to no spending money for other university essentials. Therefore, the discount allowed me to use my student loan to help with other aspects of my university life.
With the money saved by the accommodation discount, I could treat myself to buy new clothes or even a go for a spontaneous night out without the fear of the financial repercussions that followed.
Stress-free zone
As a university student, especially as a first year student, managing your finances can cause you to worry about how to afford to live and how you should spend your money.
The accommodation discount has allowed me to have fewer money related worries, which has not only improved my mental health but also allowed me to focus on my studies as opposed to worrying about my finances.
Furthermore, the accommodation discount helped make the on-campus halls more affordable for me. Many new students see safety and reliability as key factors when selecting accommodation, and therefore living on-campus might be desirable for them. The opportunity to receive a discount on accommodation can therefore help those who might see living on-campus as unattainable.

Improved Campus Lifestyle
Whilst it is great finding accommodation that fits within a set budget, it also important to ensure you pick accommodation where you feel comfortable in and somewhere you simply want to spend your time. The discount allows you to view various types of university accommodation that you perhaps wouldn’t of considered looking at due to the fear around finances.
