What were the benefits of undertaking a placement year?

It provided me with practical exposure to real-world operations, particularly in digital distribution and coordination. It also helped bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry practice, allowing me to understand how decisions are made in a fast-paced working environment. I developed a clearer understanding of workplace expectations, time management, and professional communication.

What employability skills have you developed from your placement?

I developed key skills such as data handling, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Working in a dynamic environment improved my ability to adapt quickly, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines. I also gained experience in using data to support operational decisions and improved my confidence in professional interactions.

What do you feel was the biggest achievement / highlight of your placement year?

Gaining hands-on experience in digital distribution processes and understanding how data can influence operational decisions was my biggest achievement. Being able to contribute to real tasks and see their impact on business performance was a valuable highlight.

What advice would you offer students applying for a placement?

Be open to learning and adaptable to different types of roles, as real-world experience can sometimes differ from expectations. Take the initiative, ask questions, and actively seek opportunities to develop your skills. Being able to manage your time effectively between work and academic responsibilities is also very important.
