The University of Northampton was my first choice as it’s near to my home and offered the course I wanted to study, with a clear course structure and the ability to choose the pathway into the sector I most wanted to pursue a career in. I did consider other universities, but when I attended the UON open day and taster day, I was sure that it was the most suitable for me. I was impressed with the lecturers’ determination to teach – it was interesting to get to know their background and hear how passionately they talked about the course, and they provided valuable information and advice. I was also impressed with the modern facilities, well-maintained library with many academic resources, and the on-campus work experience opportunities. I really like my university and now I know I made the right decision. The staff are always truly helpful in supporting students in different situations.

My first career goal is to successfully complete my degree so I can start a master’s course in September. I plan to study the MBA course at UON while looking for employment opportunities in the finance and accounting sector so I can use the skills and knowledge I’ve obtained during my studies. My long-term goal is to help businesses manage their budget, maintain financial stability and lead them towards growth. In the future I would like to complete AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) courses to help me become an accountant. I’m very keen to get the right expertise through the development of different skills to allow me to undertake my responsibilities in a professional way.

Throughout my studies, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge of different topics, including finance, marketing, sustainability, and international business, which will help my career and personal development when I graduate. My studies consist of deep oversight of different sectors of business and industries – this is very helpful for me because although I may work in the finance and accounting sector, my knowledge is not limited to these sectors and will be helpful when working with entrepreneurs, organisations, and companies of all types and sizes.

Additionally, a few of the course modules are specifically designed for career planning and personal development and I like the fact that they require me to think about my future, and my goals and aspirations. I’ve got to know the Chartered Management Institute, the University’s Student Futures team, and the support that’s available relating to employment. This has helped me identify my strengths and weaknesses, and the improvements I should make to get a job in my desired sector.

My studies have also helped me to be more aware of myself and my abilities, and I continuously look to develop skills like teamwork, communication, time management, and digital skills, to help me become a professional early career candidate in readiness for the job market.

The skills and knowledge gained on my degree that I feel will be most useful in my future career are working as a team, networking, and communication, as it’s important to engage with other people in different situations, to get to know lots of professionals, and connect with them to share experiences.

In addition to my studies, I am a UON Student Influencer, a role which allows me to write blogs on everything related to the University, Northampton, student life, and the opportunities that arise while studying. I keenly share my knowledge and experience so other students can receive important information on how to settle at the University of Northampton and how to make the most of their time there. I am also a Student Ambassador, which means I promote the University to applicants and new students, by supporting events like Open Days and Applicant Visit Days.

Furthermore, I take part in a student project to improve learning and the student experience on the Business programme. Its aim is to produce interesting material for new student cohorts to use as a helpful resource when dealing with any difficulties and uncertainties they may face during their studies.

These extra-curricular activities will enhance my career prospects as they will enable employers to see my engagement during my studies and demonstrate my commitment and determination. They also contribute to improving my skills and working on my weaknesses – during these activities I work on my confidence, and I’m glad that I get involved in these important aspects for the University.

The advice I would give to undergraduates interested in this career path would be to make the most of your time at the University, make sure you look after your wellbeing, and always ask for help when you need it. There are various support teams you can benefit from in even the most challenging times – you are not alone!

My UON experience so far has been resourceful, valuable, and enjoyable, allowing me to learn and progress.
