Every time we welcome a new cohort into the Doctor of Professional Practice in Health and Social Care (DProfPrac), I’m struck by the same mix of emotions our students bring with them: excitement, curiosity, and – quite often – the quiet question: “Am I really ready for this?”
And every time, over the course of their journey, those same practitioners grow into confident, research informed leaders who create real, lasting change in the lives of their organisations, communities and professions. Watching that transformation unfold is one of the most fulfilling parts of my role.
Many people join the programme because they have been carrying a question for years — something in their practice that doesn’t sit right, a challenge no one has quite solved, or a sense that “things could be better if only…” The DProfPrac gives them the space, structure, and support to finally explore those questions in depth.
One of the most powerful moments is when a student realises: “My experience matters. My insights can change practice. My research can make a difference.”
Their projects often start as something personal or local, but they grow. They become new approaches to practice, service improvements, policy contributions, or innovations that ripple far beyond their workplace. The impact is real and deeply meaningful.
Our next cohort will begin in April, and as we welcome new students only once every two years, places are intentionally limited to ensure the high level of personalised support that defines our programme. The structure is designed for working professionals, with two years of guided research methods modules followed by time dedicated to an independent thesis supported by close academic supervision.
For me, leading this programme is a privilege. I see the commitment, courage, and insight that practitioners bring. I see the extraordinary impact they go on to make. It is a reminder of how powerful practice-based research can be when the right people are given the tools and encouragement to pursue it.
If you are feeling the pull to explore something new – to challenge assumptions, deepen your expertise, or shape the future of your field – I would be very happy to talk with you about whether the DProfPrac aligns with your goals. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, or for an informal conversation.
If you want to join these students, see Doctor of Professional Practice in Health and Social Care for more or email Michelle to arrange a chat.
