Ode to Alex Honnold, a Skyscraper Climber.

Date 31 January 2026

A poetic reflection on the recent new story in response to the recent article on climber Alex Honnold who scaled Taipei 101 skyscraper without ropes.

Alex Honnold

Leaves his mark on the city

As he stands tall and quite pretty

He reaches the pinnacle

Some were cynical

Others stated this is far too political

Alex stands tall

With arms outstretched

Triumphant in achievement

We’re all in agreement

Alex reflects

It’s fun to go on a roller coaster

It’s exciting to go in a plane

It’s creative to make a painting

Or ride in a very fast train

But for Alex the climb of a very tall skyscraper

No matter how plain

Or insane

As he makes friends along the way

For Alex it is the skyscraper

That he climbs without fear

Year after year

Climbing the front

Climbing the rear

Bold and sincere

A fearless climber that he is

It is where he finds his calm, his bliss

Not for everyone it’s true

Only for that very few

To climb a skyscraper

What a caper

Nimble on his feet

What a feat

He did complete

He climbed high

Almost reached the sky

We held our breath

We did not want to hear of his death

Alex whispers, I want to live

To climb another day

And want to do it my way

So brave so strong

He did not put a foot wrong

His gaze shifted far below

People looked like ants

To and fro

We watched as he climbed the building way above

Our hearts missing a beat

We all have many emotions

Which could fill all the oceans

We imagine Alex thanking the wind

For not giving him a shove

Like a mourning dove

Alex looked up at the skyscraper

For him, so inviting

The weather calm and no lightening

He whispers, skyscraper so tall and smooth

For you, I must climb

But I don’t want to fall

As I pass the mountains quite tall

The trees below bending in gentle breeze

Alex shouts to all you dreamers of climbing a skyscraper

That stand above us all

They remind us of  how we really are quite small

What did he seek

As he climbed so high

Almost touching the clouds in the sky

To conquer Skyscrapers so tall and imposing

Is perhaps what he did seek

But then we don’t need to climb

Or walk in a straight line to reach our peak

Obstacles will always come and go

Ever fast, ever slow

What is it that we need to grow and grow

We can’t have a lightbulb moment

Without curiosity and ideas

To expect it magically to glow

So like Alex we need to work hard to follow that dream

We can’t rely just on faith

But with curiosity we can make a date

Does a skyscraper ever grow old and tired

Of holding themselves up so strong and high

With their rooftops against the sky

Well Done Alex

How amazing are you

To follow your dream, you did pursue

To be a skyscraper climber he does invite

No thank you  says I it would give me a fright

A poet I would rather be

Or reclining with a good book

That’s the life for me!
