Your free laptop

As a student at the University of Northampton, having the ability to get a free laptop as my UON student perk is a fantastic benefit. Eligible students can pick one benefit in their first year, a laptop, accommodation discount, or campus catering credit, more information can be found here.

Picking the laptop perk allows you to complete assignments, attend online lectures, and stay connected with academic work. However, proper care and maintenance are essential to ensure it continues running throughout our studies. Here are the key tips to make sure your laptop runs its best!

Keep it Clean

A well-maintained laptop starts with physical cleanliness. Regularly wipe down the screen and keyboard with a microfiber cloth to remove dust and fingerprints. Avoid eating or drinking near the laptop as crumbs can get stuck and can damage internal components. Stickers and personal decorations are a great way to make the laptop yours!

Manage Storage wisely

Running out of storage can slow down your laptop. With the amount of work you have to do, its advised you keep your files organised and delete unnecessary documents, downloads and temporary files. Cloud storage like OneDrive, which is already available to UON students, can help free up space while keeping files accessible from anywhere.

Protect Against Viruses and Malware

Cybersecurity is crucial when using any device. The University of Northampton provides students with security software to protect against viruses and malware. Ensure that the antivirus provided in up to date and avoid downloading files from untrusted sources. The most important thing is to be careful of phishing emails and suspicious links.

Optimise Battery Life

To prolong the battery life of your laptop, try not to keep it plugged in constantly. Allow the battery to discharge and recharge periodically; and DO NOT charge the laptop overnight. Adjusting screen brightness and turn off unnecessary background applications to conserve power. If you’re not using the laptop, shut it down instead of leaving it in sleep mode.

By following these maintenance tips, you can keep your laptop in running condition, ensuring that it remains a reliable companion throughout your university life.
