Community Radio

In January 2025, I joined NLive Radio as a volunteer show producer, an opportunity which I found through an advert on the station’s website. Although my course does not relate to this extracurricular activity.

I found this opportunity intriguing and beneficial in the long term.

Here are some reasons why I chose to be a volunteer for NLive Radio:

Gaining Transferrable Skills

During my time working as a producer, I have been involved in emailing guests to invite them to the show, as well as maintaining the show diary and the guest log. This has meant that I have gained administrative and written communication skills, which can be useful in jobs such as business administration. Moreover, understanding the importance of attention to detail can create good practice going forward in other roles, especially if you are working with spreadsheets, which I have had to do for this role.

Additionally, I have occasionally interviewed guests as well for the show ‘Undiscovered Northampton’, and I have had the chance to enhance my verbal communication skills to make the interviews successful, which is beneficial going forward for other purposes. Furthermore, being involved in outdoor shows where you can market the station to the general public can help you get over your shyness and become more proactive, which can make you a more dynamic and effective team player.

For Fun

I just enjoy contributing to the local community by volunteering for NLive. You have the chance to meet a wide range of people from the local area of Northampton, listening to a whole array of different stories that give you an open perspective about life. Also getting the chance to listen to a wide range of music, while occasionally choosing a song for the show can be be fulfilling as well!
