Patient and public involvement and engagement
An expanding area for engagement in Public Involvement in Education and Research involves offering support and guidance to researchers interested in integrating service user and carer involvement into their projects and adheres the criteria for Patient & Public Involvement (PPI) set by funding bodies. Meaningful involvement enhances the relevance of research studies and their applicability to practice, significantly improving the potential for disseminating findings and creating impact through collaboration with those directly affected. The UK Standards for Public Involvement in Research has produced a guide for researchers to improve the quality and consistency of the public involvement in your research.
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) have produced a range of PPI (Patient and Public Involvement) resources for applicants applying to the NIHR research programmes.
Guidance for researchers on PPI
NIHR has developed guidance for researchers on how patients and the public can be involved.
Payment and recognition for PPI
NIHR also provide guidance on reward and payment for involvement.
Co-production
Also you can find NIHR guidance on co-producing a research project.
Providing feedback to public contributors
Useful, practical and evidence-based guidance is available on providing effective two-way feedback between researchers and public contributors.
Online Public Reviewing Course
You may find the online interactive course for patient/public reviewers useful when considering how to design the PPI in your project. It will describe how patient and public reviewers and public committee members assess research plans.
