School of Social Sciences

The School of Social Sciences at The University of Northampton offers a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The School of Social Sciences provides top class facilities, including a relaxed meeting area, specialised psychology laboratories and a mooting room/mock courtroom.

Practical experience

The School of Social Sciences offers opportunities to gain practical experience with field trips on many courses and exchange trips abroad for those studying Human Geography.

Sociology and Criminology courses include work alongside groups such as child protection, the police and probation hostels to bring real-life situations into the learning environment.

Politics and Sociology offer unique placement opportunities to work with MPs in the House of Commons.

Research and conferences

The University of Northampton's Social Sciences staff have an international reputation for research and teaching excellence. The school regularly hosts conferences which are attended by academics, journalists, researchers and policy makers.

The School of Social Sciences is home to several leading centres of research:

  • Northampton Institute for Urban Affairs (NIUA)
  • Centre for the Study of Anomalous Psychological Processes
  • The Centre for Children and Youth (CCY)

Social enterprise

The University of Northampton is committed to delivering a new student experience, underpinned by a culture of entrepreneurship, research and social enterprise. In delivering this aim, we will become the first university in the UK to integrate both teaching and research activities, in all degree disciplines, with social enterprise and aim to be the UK's number one university for social enterprise by 2015.

The social enterprise theme unites work carried out in all our Schools, and many of our Departments, and builds on our existing strengths in enterprise promotion, community interaction, regional engagement, widening participation, third sector partnership, student volunteering and employability.

Wednesday 14th December 2011 Conference addresses the prevention of extremism Over 100 delegates from academia, the police, youth justice and probation services, and the charity sector gathered at Park Campus recently to discuss what can be done to prevent extremism. Monday 21st November 2011 Solicitor General speaks on the value of justice Edward Garnier QC MP, Solicitor General for England, Wales and Northern Ireland has stated that the current economic climate must not be allowed to damage the legal system and those it serves. Wednesday 16th November 2011 University supports CAB pro bono clinic launch Law staff and students from The University of Northampton’s School of Social Sciences have given their expertise to the Northampton and District Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) pro bono clinic.

Wednesday 8th February 2012 Congress to Campus In association with the Eccles Centre for American Studies at The British Library, the School of Social Sciences presents a free conference for schools.
