Your University Journey

Why did you choose your course at UON?

I was looking to do a MSc to advance my NHS career and UON was significantly cheaper than similar courses running in London. Also, I was able to easily travel to UON and was lucky enough to get a student car parking slot.

What aspects of the course did you enjoy the most and why?

I enjoyed the therapeutic skills modules and learning critical thinking skills.

Your Career

How do you think your studies have helped your career or personal development?

I didn’t think I could ever complete a MSc – but I have. Since then, I’ve achieved a promotion at work to operational lead, as well as publishing a number of papers (including my dissertation).

Describe your career progression so far, and any plans you have for the future. Are there any particular hurdles you may face?

I was a Paediatric Dietitian before moving into mental health and faced the barrier that there is minimal training for mental health roles within my profession. I would like to continue my research and maybe one day, do a PhD.

Which, if any, skills and knowledge/understanding gained on your degree are most useful in your current role?

Critical thinking and a broad knowledge base in mental heath.

Your advice

In one sentence, what advice would you give to undergraduates interested in this career path or anything you wish you had known earlier?

Go for it – it’s hard work (I cried a lot at the start!) but it’s so worth it!

In ten words, or less how would you summarise your UON experience?

Supportive and amazing tutors got me through!
