Safety and Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP)

Assistance with emergency evacuation

Your safety is paramount and there are a number of measures that the University has in place to ensure you remain safe during your stay with us.

If your disability restricts you from evacuating a building safely, we need to ensure appropriate provisions are made for you. You may therefore require a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP). We will work with you to develop a PEEP that is bespoke to your needs.

At the time of an evacuation if you have a disability that may affect your ability to evacuate down stairs safely, the most appropriate and safe place for you will be a ‘Safe Refuge’.

Activity 1: Safe Refuge – an overview of communication in a safe refuge

Please become familiar with how the communication operates within a safe refuge. The instructions are as follows:

The location of the refuge is automatically identified to others when the Call Button is pressed. The communication panel will only be active during a fire alarm.

• during a fire alarm the green lights around the Call Button will flash until the Call Button is pressed
• to initiate communication: press the Call Button once and release – the lights will revert to ON continuously and a call tone may be heard
• a member of the Security Team will answer the call
• to respond: press and hold the Call Button
• to listen to Security: release the Call Button

Activity 3: Personal safety on and off campus

To help us remain safe in public spaces we all need to take responsibility for our personal safety. Here’s some tips to consider:

• always plan how you are going to get home – check times of last train or bus
• don’t walk home alone – stay safe and stick with friends if at all possible or get a taxi
• always try to walk facing the traffic and remain alert of your surroundings; phones and music can easily distract
• always carry the phone number of a trusted, licensed taxi or minicab company
• consider getting a personal safety alarm
